The strange, elongated, bolt-like shells have been attributed to a variety of taxa, most often annelids or mollusks. However, a whole scattering of new finds from Armenia have pointed to the structure of the tentaculite body-retracting muscles. They suggest that the Paleozoic “screws” are related to bryozoans and other tentacled animals.
